Darjeeling 1st Flush, Risheehat Estate

$28.00
| /

Eagerly anticipated each spring, Darjeeling First Flush represents the initial harvest from plants that have lain dormant all winter. The mountainous region, at the foothills of the Himalayans, has long been celebrated for its dramatic landscape and distinctive teas. For this style, the leaves are carefully hand-picked and undergo a unique hard withering process, which produces the characteristic fresh, nuanced fragrances and a bright flavor.

The organic Risheehat Estate, which translates to “the abode of holy men,” ranges in elevation from 1800 to just over 5000 feet. The boldest of our first flush offerings this year, this lot (DJ 16) begins with deep aromas of magnolia and spice—and a hint of wintergreen—opening to earthy sweet flavors of squash blossom and honey.

Darjeeling 1st flush Risheehat Estate

This is a delicate and fragile tea, even by Darjeeling standards. I brewed it first with 180 degree water and 4 minutes steeping time. I thought the tea was fragrant and delicate, but it was very pale and one dimensional. I modified my brewing strategies, eventually using 200 degree water with a 5 minute infusion. Brewed that way, the tea was multi flavored and elegant. This is not a robust black tea; to me it’s closer to a green, but much more complex. I’ve come to crave this tea, especially during the day when I can give it the attention it deserves.

yummy flavors

Sometimes I don't remember why I like a particular tea more than others, but then I rip off the label and put on my fridge for my next order - which I've done with this one - twice! I love teas that are gorgeous and aroma-y and pick me up in the morning and make my toast and tea a morning experience.

Good Solid Choice

The tea brews well - I agree that a 5 minute steep is much better than 4 and I have been using 200 degree water. It is my go to Darjeeling at the moment.
