Darjeeling 1st Flush, Arya Estate

Eagerly anticipated each spring, Darjeeling First Flush is the initial harvest from plants that have lain dormant all winter. The mountainous region, at the foothills of the Himalayans, has long been celebrated for its dramatic landscape and distinctive teas. For this unique style, the buds and tender young leaves leaves are carefully hand-picked, and undergo an unusual hard withering process to rapidly drive off moisture. This produces the tea's characteristic nuanced fragrances and a light, bright taste.

The vertiginous Arya Estate, founded in 1885, drops from nearly 6,000 feet to 3,000 feet in elevation over just 300 acres. South of Darjeeling town, this farm has been organic since 2000. This lot (EX 30) was made in its proprietary “diamond” style, with long, twisted leaves that unfurl with thirst-quenching flavors of roots and fruit—think lemonade or candied kumquats. Fragrant and juicy, it’s the sweetest of our 1st flush offerings this season.

Well worth the price

I look forward to First Flushes every spring and drink them until the weather starts to cool in the Fall. The Arya Estate is balanced and delicate. I live at 7,500 ft so water boils at 200 F, By default that was the temperature at which it was brewed in a small teapot. I allowed it to steep for a little longer than recommended (5 minutes) and the result was excellent. A second steeping produced a light refined tasting tea for iced tea the next day.

Exceptional tea -- drink it while it's so fresh

As many other teas from the Arya garden, this tea is out of the ordinary. It combines sophisticated fruity notes with a strong vegetal, fresh leaf like flavor that is almost overpowering. I recommend to try this tea while it's so lively and fresh. So far I have tried about 15 different 2023 Darjeeling first flushs and this tea truly stands out as something unique.

Took me a while to figure it out but it’s great

I tried all combos of temps 200-210 and 3-5g/12 oz? Teapot. Finally got it with 212, 5g and a mug with a tea infuser and about 4 min. Less water. And it’s delicious!!! Just took me a while to figure out how to actually taste this one
