Darjeeling 1st Flush, Goomtee Estate
Eagerly anticipated each spring, Darjeeling First Flush is the initial harvest from plants that have lain dormant all winter. The mountainous region, at the foothills of the Himalayans, has long been celebrated for its dramatic landscape and distinctive teas. For this unique style, the buds and tender young leaves leaves are carefully hand-picked, and undergo an unusual hard withering process to rapidly drive off moisture. This produces the characteristic nuanced fragrances and a light, bright taste.
The classic china bush flavor—from old cultivar plants—is highlighted in this special lot (DJ 1) from the Goomtee Estate. Grown at elevations of 4,500 feet, it represents the garden’s first harvest of 2022, on April 1. The crystalline, straw-yellow color in the cup is a crisp tea, redolent of raw nuts and squash, crowned with a sweet aroma.
