Darjeeling 2nd Flush, Balasun Estate
Darjeelings are standouts in the black tea category, renown for their complex aromas and nuanced flavors. The flushes refer to the harvest: second flushes are the second hand-picking of the plants, usually in late April or early May, and are processed to maximize oxidation of the leaves.
This lot (DJ-120) is from the Balasun Estate, which was founded in 1871 in the Kurseong area, near the border of Nepal. Spanning 450 acres, the garden’s elevation ranges from about 1150 to 4600 feet. Note the toasty, baked squash fragrance of the dry leaf, which opens to roasted hazelnut and licorice in the cup. A rich mouthfeel rounds out this balanced, bright tea.
