Darjeeling 2nd Flush, Thurbo Estate
Richly fragrant and dynamically flavorful, Darjeelings are jewels of the black tea category. Plucked from the foothills of the Himalayas in mid-spring—a few weeks after first flush harvest—the small leaves are rolled, fully oxidized and baked before a careful final sorting by hand.
This lot (DJ 164) hails from the Thurbo Estate in the lush Mirik Valley, bordering Nepal to the west, with elevations spanning 5,000 feet. Comprised of clonal plants with abundant buds, the beautifully twisted leaves unfurl with a cocoa powder aroma and a taste reminiscent of popovers and savory baked goods, all crowned by a pleasant astringency on the finish. Medium bodied and well balanced between citrus, toasted nut and deep floral notes, this is a cup to savor.
