An exclusive from In Pursuit of Tea! This green tea, organically grown in Samcholing, Bhutan, is the only tea produced in the country. The high elevation fields are located at the summer palace of the second king, and were originally planted in the 1950s. A collective of 26 women now operate the 43-acre farm, hand-picking, pan-firing and rolling the small leaves into a simple twisted shape. The bright, sweet flavor is reminiscent of a Chinese green tea, with herbaceous notes of spinach, crisp fruit and citrus, and a juicy, lightly spicy aroma.
Unlike many green teas, the leaves can stand up to multiple steepings—try four or five—using water around 180°F. Sip the golden green elixir and enjoy the taste of a new tradition.

A rare taste of the Himalayas
Despite its proximity to Assam and Darjeeling's long-standing tea industries, cultivated Camellia sinensis in Bhutan is almost unheard of. We've been involved with this rare tea region since before IPOT was founded in 1999, when Sebastian Beckwith began working with Bhutan's Ministry of Agriculture to propagate a patch of neglected trees into the beginnings of a tea garden.
In 2012, the ministry built a stand-alone processing facility and teahouse, where an all-female cooperative of local farmers started crafting and selling green tea, using methods they learned from a visiting Korean botanist. We’re honored to share this unique tea with the West, and are excited
for the opportunity to support this community agricultural endeavor. It’s a rare chance for us all to foster a new Bhutanese tea tradition and watch it thrive.
