We're Hot for Hojicha Frozen Hot Chocolate

Hojicha frozen hot chocolate recipe

What's lighter than a milkshake and more refreshing than an iced latte? A frozen hot chocolate with our rich, roasted Hojicha Powder! This slushy, not-too-sweet treat will keep you frosty all summer and is a breeze to make.

Hojicha is a classic Japanese tea made from roasted green tea leaves and stems. It's often served in restaurants because it plays well with food, and it's a great after-dinner digestive. We love pairing Hojicha with dark chocolate to highlight its nutty umami flavor, and our new Hojicha Powder—a ground form of the tea that's become popular throughout Japan—is a natural choice for whisking or blending into all kinds of drinks and desserts.

Want to experiment more? This slushy drink would taste delicious with a few ounces of dark rum blended in. Or try a matcha version with our vivid Karasu Ingredient Grade Matcha.

Hojicha Frozen Hot Chocolate

Makes 2 servings

  • 3 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup whole milk, cold
  • 1 tablespoon Hojicha Powder
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 cups ice

In a small saucepan over low heat, slowly melt chocolate with a splash of the milk. Keep the rest of the milk chilled. Whisk frequently to keep chocolate from burning. As soon as it's fully melted, remove from heat and add Hojicha Powder, cocoa, sugar and salt and whisk until fully dissolved.

Transfer chocolate mixture to a blender with the remaining chilled milk and ice. Blend until the drink is smooth and thick with a slushy consistency. Pour into two glasses and sip immediately.
